Those Crazy Canadians

Read Margaret Atwood's letter (Presence, pp 510-512) and respond this way:
Angrily rebut her argument. Act incensed. Get on your high horse and blast away at her.
P.S. It doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with her yourself; I just want you to take up the opposite side. Have fun.

  1. I am offended at what Margret Atwood had to say about America. Yes every country has problems and they always will. There is absolutely no need to be criticizing America. If this country has hurt you so badly then just stay away. I am sure if the country could talk, it would say that it didn't want you here either. "If you proceed much futher down the slippery slope, people around the world will stop admiring the good things about you." This comment that Margaret wrote is foolish and I'm sorry but it's stupid. Have you ever made a mistake where your family, other relatives, or close friends have not forgiven you for? Everyone makes mistakes and yes America has made a few big ones but there is just no need to criticize about a place where someone lives. It is insulting and immature.

  2. first of all Margaret, your an idiot! yeah the county has changed but so has the rest of the world. we need to change to support ourselves and to stay alive. could you imagine if everything we gained in fifty five years was taken away? we woulnt have a chance to survive. other countries would eat us alive! all i want to say to you is that the country has changed to fit all of its inhabitants so we can live the best lives we can. so shut up!

  3. Excusssssseeeee Meee!!!
Last time i checked i believe that as a nation we must change to adapt to the world. The world is always changing and for that we have to change with it. I don't understand how you can sit there and have the nerve to write such ridiculous horse sh*% about the United States. I agree with Felicia, when she stated and i quote; "If this country has hurt you so badly then just stay away" I think this to be a true statement, no one is forcing our country on you. so just leave and please for the love of god don't return. then you could find something else to bitch about where ever you may find yourself. i have a feeling you will never be truly content

  4. Ok Margaret first off since you don't live here why are you complaining? If you don't like what America is doing then just ignore it. The whole world is changing and it has to change. We can't stay in the past and ignore what other countries are doing especially when they start to bother us. There is no country that does not have problems! I also agree with Felicia it isn't like America is forcing anything on you. So just leave America alone and maybe focus on Canada's problems not America's

  5. Well Margaret, some of the points you are making may be true in a sence but changes need to take place. Some things are changing for the better and some for the worse. I don't believe people will ever truly stop admiring America for all that it does, some may not trust or believe in some of the things that happens. In the end I guess you just have to trust that all the good and bad changes are happening for a reason. Not everyone is going to be happy with the changes or events taking place but being so negative about them is not going to help anything. I don't think some parts of America's past were any better that what is happening now. So why bring up the past? Why look on the past when even some of that was bad? Changes need to happen so we can grow and move on.

  6. Dear Margaret,

I see that you have a very importnat point behind your letter and that you are concerned with the things you are observing; however, you have no right to acuuse America of falling behind or losing its prescence of greatness. You are no professional in this feild. You say that onther countries will start to look upon us differently, yet there are many countries that already despise us from thousands of miles away. They don't care what we stand for, and they are already conviced that Americans are selfish, arrogant, and simply appauling. Sure we are facing many changes withing our country, but it is natural hardship that is untimately inevitable. We are still a strong nation, and the emerging generation has the ability to turn everything around. We still stand by the same ideals, but we are people stuggling with our own problems just like you or any person on the planet. To function as a country and uphold our image is not a simple task. Everyone must reach the same beliefs and the same state of mind in order for us to function together in a exact manner. It is not our counrty you should attack, it is individual people.

  7. Dear Ms. Atwood,

Who the hell do you think you are? First off, America still stands for the same things it always had; freedom and power. Just because some of the leaders make mistakes does not mean that America is changing for the worse. The whole world is changing constantly and if we want to keep up, we must change too. What we have been doing has worked for us for almost 400 years. Democracy has stood strong and has led us to choose a new president who can very well fix most of our problems. No country can better themselves without first making some mistakes. So what if we have to invade a few countries? It is only for the better. America is not here to pick on everyone else or to gloat about being the best. We are just here to be free people. Maybe you should think about that before you rant about how we've "changed".

  8. Who the Fu** do you think you are Margaret? Are you perfect, I don't think so, that means shut the Hell up and if you don't like something then rid your self of it. Yes America changes but so does the everyday person, who are you to judge? You don't even live here so how can you honestly judge America? I think you have no clue what your talking about and you just wanted something to complaion about! Have you ever heard the saying, "you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"? You should learn it because no matter what you will always find mistakes and things wrong but its people that act say things like you that gets things in a frenzy. Grow up and get a life. You don't like it then the hell with you don't bohter us!

Have a nice day, idiot. :)

  9. America is indeed in a time of need but that should not push you away from this free and civil country. Yes there has been many changes that many Americans do not like, but they are sucking it up and dealing with it and not running away like a coward. I know you may think that other countries are superior to America but this is one of the only countries that let the people speak thier opinions. If you dont like this country so much just leave, like shayne said no ones holding you here.

  10. I disagree with what Margaret Atwood has to say. Every country has their problems and the United States is just in a rough place right now. Sure its taking a little while to get out of our hole but we will get there. We dont go around trash talking other countries and how bad they are doing with their economy and country. People should just leave our country alone. If people have a problem with it then they can either move or do something about it but talking bad about it certainly isnt going to do anything.

  11. Margaret Atwood you old hag. America is a great, and i mean, great place to live. You are selfish and ungrateful for the place you have grown up in. Look at the broader scheme of things. America could be like darfur. America could be unsafe to live. But it is not. We are just in a small rough patch right now. America is not where is was back in the 1800's during the time period you seem to be from. But, nor is any other developing country. America is the home of the free. Be grateful for the place you live.

  12. Dear Margaret,

I believe anyone just like you can talk about all the different things that America has made poor decsions on, and how they really impacted the whole nation, but if everyone just kept dwelling on all these downfalls that were attempts to progressive change, than the whole nation would get no where. All your points are very understandable and make sense but if everyone thought the way you do nothing would ever change and go anywhere. It takes some choices that dont end up the way they should, to get the nation to learn and make more benefical choices for the future that will bring change and expand our nation for the better.

  13. I do not agree with the statements Margaret Atwood made about America. Yes, America has it's problems, but who doesn't? We have made some mistakes, but they were attempts to make things better. It happens to everyone at some point in time. If America is such a terrible place to live, how come you aren't doing a good deed and helping us become more successful? Nobody's perfect and if everybody was as negative as you are I think America would be in a worse situation.

  14. Well Margaret, you have done it this time. You pissed off the wrong Americans. In response to your letter i have this to say to you, come back to America and live here. You will find that our jail systems aren't over populated, all of our new policies are necessary. How could you write something so horrific about the country you claimed to love so much? How could you write something like that without even living in this country anymore? Well I think you should reconsider what you have said, and do a lot more research as to whether what you wrote was true or not. I hope to hear back from you margaret this is't finished yet.

  15. Dear Margaret,
I understand that America is changing but so is the rest of the world. Who are you to point the finger at us. It would be one thing if you lived in America but you don't. And what excatly are you accomplishing by singling us out. If you have a problem with america then stay the hell out. We already have enough people to worry about.

  16. Dear Margaret,
The whole world has its problems, and a lot of them are worse than Americas. Why would you call us out, seeing on how there are so many place i can think of right now that plenty worse than America. dont live here if you dont like it. we dont need you criticizing us.
