Please read K. Anthony Appiah's piece, "Learn Statistics. Go Abroad." It is on page 124 in "Presence," but you can also read it here in Slate.
List one of the reasons he gives for studying outside the United States. Then answer the following question: If you could spend a semester or a year at a foreign university, where would you go and why?
One of the reasons he gives for studying outside the US is because students dont know what life is like outside the community in which they grew up. If I could spend a semester or even a year at a Foreign University I would go to somewhere in France, particularly Nice because I have visited there before and I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. I would love to study there not only for its beauty but because i am very interested in the french language and its culture. That would just be really cool for me to do and in fact I someday hope to do that.
ReplyDeleteStudying outside of the United States or somewhere else from where you grew up. He thinks students should get a feel for what it is like to be in a different Country or community. I personally would really like to go to Tialand. For some reason this place just interest me and I don't know why. It would be fun to learn a new language and the real language at that and just be somewhere else other than here.
ReplyDeleteA reason he gives for studying outside the United States is that many students don't know what life is outside the country they are originally from. If i could choose one place to go to college out of the United States i would choose Greece. I find it a beautiful country and would love the chance to go and explore it. I think it would be a great opportunity for me to discover what else is out there.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons Appiah gives for studying abroad is because a liberal education should "prepare you for life as a free person" and many students never get a chance to experience life somewhere different. Many are stuck within thier own communities. If I were to study abroad, it would be a long process until I decided where to go. If I were to throw out some names of countries I would like to visit however, I might see myself in Italy, Austrialia, or possibly somewhere I havent even thought of yet. It would be a difficult choice.
ReplyDeleteTo me the main reason appiah gives for studieng abroad is experiencing different cultures. When you study in another country you are thrown into an enviorment completely different then the one your used to. If i had the choice i would love to study in Thailand. My cousin spent a year of her life there and returned with some of the most interesting stories id ever heard. I've always wanted to have stories of my own like hers so im hoping that i will have that opertunity.
ReplyDeleteAppiah gives states many reasons for studying abroad. One he feels has become less popular as time has gone on. That is the junior year abroad. He feels that because the tradition seems to be fading; what better time then now to bring its popularity back? I agree with Appiah's idea. It would be great to go abroad and experience how other cultures live. If I could study abroad anywhere I would go to Greee. I have always want to go to Greece ever since the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" movie came out. The culture is rich in history and is just so facinating.
ReplyDeletethere are many reasons for studying abroad. you dont understand life unless you know how everyone lives it. living the lifestyle of america is much different than those of other countries. you have to understand the lives of africans, europeans, asian, and all others out there. if i could go somewhere to study abroad, i would go to Ethiopia to learn the lifestyle of those in need. i am a lucky person to have the life i have and i dont understand how they live. i would love to go and give up everything while staying with them. they would give anything to have my life. i want to understand how they live and the troubles they face everyday. i take too much for granted.
ReplyDeleteone reason appiah thinks studying outside the U.S. is important it to be able to experiance other cultures and lifstyles. if i were to visit another country it would be New Zealand. i would want to visit there when it is summer time here so that in New Zealand i could go snowboarding. i would also like to visit NZ because i had a friend who was born there so it would be really cool if i could kind of see the surroundings he grew up in.
ReplyDeleteOne of the many reasons that he gives for studying abroad is you can learn a different language. Most students don't know any other language than english. If i were to visit another country it would be Italy. I have been to france and spain but would love to visit Italy. It would be something new for one thing and plus there is a lot of historical sites in Italy that I would love to visit. I would also like to maybe go to Australia because my junior year I had to study Australia and I found it interesting.
ReplyDeleteone instance in which he gives for studying outside of the united states is the fact taht people dont know what life is like outside of their own community, its as if he finds people not very open minded.
ReplyDeleteI have never wanted to go to school anywhere besides the united states, i still am not sure if i even want to be going to school at all. i guess if i had to pick a place away from the united states it would either be canada or somewhere in germany, im not sure why i just like the way of life in these places.
One reason that he says you should study outside of the united states is because people should get out of the where they grew up and into a different kind of community and be introduced to a whole new culture. Visiting a foreign university would be an amazing experience, having the choice of which university to visit i would like to go to Thailand because my brother went there for 6 months to teach english and he really liked it a lot, the culture was very different and barely anyone there spoke english, i would love to experience what he did and see how a different culture goes about things and lives.
ReplyDeleteHe wanted to study abroad because he wanted to know what it is like outside of where he grew up. If I were to study abroad I would want to go to Scotland. I am mostly Scottish from my dads side, and I've already been to Ireland, my number one destination, so I want to go to Scotland next.
ReplyDeleteOne reason he wanted suggests to study outside the United States is so that you can know how it is to learn in other countries. Some people, like me, have never been out of the United States and don't know what it's like to be in a different culture. If I could go somewhere to study abroad I think I would want to go to Ireland. My reasoning is because my best friend went with her mom this past summer, and they said it was a great experience; having the different languages and the different ways of life. I would be interested to go, just to see how much different it really is.
